UK post-Brexit lorry management measures stood down

Some post-Brexit road freight traffic management measures put in place ahead of the UK’s departure from EU rules on 1 January will be removed this month, “as trade returns to normal levels” the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) today announced.

DFDS LAUNCHES NEW SERVICE FROM SHEERNESS TO CALAIS

The service will start on the 1st of June and will offer one daily sailing in each direction between the two ports.

The service will be operated by the Gothia Seaways, which can carry up to 165 unaccompanied freight units (trailers or containers without drivers).

Ports prepare for Suez surge

Following the refloating of the 20,000 teu Evergreen containership ‘Ever Given’ that has been blocking the Suez Canal for the best part of a week, attention is now turning to the surge of imports that are due to arrive at Europe’s shores as a backlog of vessels begin to transit the canal.

Among those ships that have been waiting to transit the canal are 100 containerships with an aggregated capacity of 1m teu, according to figures from Lloyd’s List Intelligence. While some of that cargo is outbound or empties, on average 52% of canal capacity each week is northbound to Europe.

UK announces Covid tests for inbound hauliers

Hauliers arriving in England from outside the UK from 6 April onwards will need to take a COVID-19 test if they are staying for more than two days, the UK government has announced, as the country bids to limit the numbers of infections of potentially vaccine-resistant variations of the virus.

The International Road Transport Union (IRU) has urged the European Union (EU) to “stand firm” against new COVID-19 measures imposed by several member states,which it says are beginning to cause chaos to goods transport by road across Europe, in particular, on the key trade route from Italy northwards across the Brenner Pass, as well as on East-West corridors.
